we are so smart! S-M-A-T-R...doh!

check this out... Seattle tops the list of America's most educated cities, with more than half its population 25 years and older holding at least a bachelor's degree. (National rate = 25.9%) but only 8th highest in terms of salary. highest is san jose at about $71k...which is coincidently the san jose poverty line as well. http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/Departments/elearning/?article=educatedcities&GT1=7571

Skiing drunk 'not easy,' Bode says

“Talk about a hard challenge right there. ... If you ever tried to ski when you’re wasted, it’s not easy,” Miller told “60 Minutes” for a segment that will air Sunday. “Try and ski a slalom when ... you hit a gate less than every one second, so it’s risky. You’re putting your life at risk. ... It’s like driving drunk, only there are no rules about it in ski racing.”

Asked if the risk meant he would never ski drunk again, Miller replied “No, I’m not saying that.”

now i am generally not a fan of alcohol because it is the most dangerous and harmful drug available (other than maybe meth) to oneself and others, and generally just think it makes you stupid... ("it's like pouring sand in a gearbox", as my neuroscientist phd friend brent once described it's affect on the brain), i do appreciate this guy's spirit and reckless abondonment of the norm. i've heard from many people that skiing high is supposed to be quite a performance enhancement. i wouldn't know though. i don't ski.

and i'd like to thank msnbc alerts for telling me about this informative story. oh you don't get msnbc alerts from alerts.msnbc.com? geez...

Talking about Meditate on This: Buddhist Tradition Thickens Parts of the Brain - Yahoo! News

Meditate on This: Buddhist Tradition Thickens Parts of the Brain - Yahoo! News

"Meditation alters brain patterns in ways that are likely permanent, scientists have known. But a new study shows key parts of the brain actually get thicker through the practice. Brain imaging of regular working folks who meditate regularly revealed increased thickness in cortical regions related to sensory, auditory and visual perception, as well as internal perception -- the automatic monitoring of heart rate or breathing, for example"

in a related study conducted by pat roberson, meditation and Buddhsm also thicken god's wrath for you

closer to bill

So apparently I’ve had a new manager for a week now (my fifth so far this year)…I must’ve missed that memo. However now bill gates is my manager’s manager’s manager’s manager’s manager’s manager. Damn man... at this rate I’ll be there in no time! seriously though it’s great to be on a team (the team formerly known as MessageCast) that is working on the same things I am (MSN Alerts). I’ve been orphaned for too long :-)

The Tao of Leadership

one of my all time favorite books is the Tao of Leadership...very helpful and inspirational in the chaotic battle of work life and ego balance. so here's a thought for the day...

---------

Take It Easy

Trying too hard produces unexpected results:

    • The flashy leader lacks stability
    • Trying to rush matters gets you nowhere
    • Trying to appear brilliant is not enlightened
    • Insecure leaders try to promote themselves
    • Impotent leaders capitalize on their position
    • It is not very holy to point out how holy you are

All these behaviors come from insecurity. They feed insecurity. None of them helps the work. None contributes to the leader's health. The leader who knows how things happen does not do these things.

Consider:

    • When you think that you are so good, what are you comparing yourself with? God? Or your own insecurities?
    • Do you want fame? Fame will complicate your life and compromise simplicity in your comings and goings.
    • Is it money? The effort of trying to get rich will steal your time.
    • Any form of egocentricity, of selfishness, obscures your deeper self and blinds you to how things happen.

------------

focus on things as they are and let it take its course. everything will work out if you stick to this principle.

ahh...this is the golden year...

ok the net it this...my friend and yours dubya is considering raising the retirement age to 72. wow. with the average life expectancy in the U.S. at just under 75 for men, this should almost solve the problem. unfortunately though, the most expensive years of your life are the last, so maybe we need to make that 74 just for good measure. that last golden year of your life will be spent in a nursing home blowing the 50+ years of social security you've saved.

but just for fun let's do the math and see how things are shapin' up in the good ol' U.S. of A...
* retirement age increasing
* average workweek upto 46 hours (38% of people 50+ hours)
* job satisfaction is at an all time low (>50% "unsatisfied")
* average commute longer than ever
* gas prices at all time high
* housing costs more than ever
* health care costs more than ever
* americans fatter than ever
* obesity cutting lifespan in US

... ok that's enough for now now (let's not even get into the fact that china and india are going to be the economic superpowers of our children's generation).

just something to think about tonight in traffic.
